My love for reading began in childhood when I sought refuge from the drudgery of daily life as one of ten children growing up in South Africa during the apartheid era. In the noise of our family, I felt invisible, believing that I had to take care of myself. The juxtaposition of vibrant community life against the backdrop of alcohol, drugs, and under-resourced schooling left me feeling lost and unmotivated. In those formative years, I discovered that I could escape into the pages of a book, where I could explore worlds that sparked my imagination and ignited my sense of adventure. Books became my sanctuary, allowing me to momentarily forget the struggles of my reality and dive into narratives that filled me with hope and possibility.
Hiding Under the Bed: A Lifeline in Literature
